Holgate Mt Macedon Ale and Pilsener

I have just about completed my ‘tour’ of the Holgate brews. Their flagship beers are the Mt Macedon Ale and their Pilsner. I have enjoyed both of these recently but have to say that they didn’t really stand out when compared to other pale ales and pilsners available. Both were certainly good beers and will no doubt provide the cash flow for Holgates to keep experimenting for many years to come.

They do have a Dunkel Weizen but it is only available on tap. The perfect excuse to go and spend some time in Woodend at the brewery, I think.

Holgate Mt MacedonBrewer: Holgate Brewhouse, Woodend.

Variety: Mt Macedon Ale (4.5% ABV)

The marketers say: A deep honey colour garnered using Vienna Malt gives this ale a warm appeal, followed by a delicate caramel malt flavour and finished with a nice balance of piney/resinous hops from the US Pacific North West. Easy on the taste buds but offering great hop character

Appearance: Nice golden pour with a healthy white head that stuck around for a little while

Aroma: Floral, grassy hop aroma. Quite refreshing in itself

Taste: Nice touch of citrus and just the right amount of malt. Finished off cleanly with the right amount of bitterness for me on this occasion.

Overall: A pleasant, thirst quenching ale. Could easily have many off these in a sitting (but didn’t)

Holgate PilsnerBrewer: Holgate Brewhouse, Woodend.

Variety: Pilsner (4.5% ABV)

The marketers say: a light straw colourĀ  brewed with bucket loads of Czech Saaz hops. … offers enjoyment for the beer enthusiast with a clean malt palate and grassy/floral hop aroma and flavour.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy golden colour with not a lot of head.

Aroma: Enough fruity hops to entice.

Taste: Clean, light, mild, quite dry and refreshing .

Overall: As for the Mt Macedon Ale, I could drink plenty of these on a hot day with little effort – perhaps too little effort.

Cheers!
